Goodbye John

I realise it sounds melodramatic, but I’ve been so busy this year thus far that I’ve hardly had time to breathe, let alone post to this blog, but I had to post on hearing of the death of John Martyn today.

If you don’t know him, John was a Scottish musician who wrote some of the loveliest songs you’ll ever hear: try his albums Bless the Weather and Solid Air, two of my favourites.

He was a fantastic guitar player: when learning to play as a student (and afterwards) I spent rather too many hours listening to certain Martyn tracks over and over, trying to work out how he got certain effects. He was a pioneer of open tunings for the acoustic guitar, which made working it out even harder.

He had a pretty colourful life, and it’s amazing really that he got to 60, but I’ll remember him as he was in the You Tube clip above.
