The Ides of March
Jean-Leon Gerome, 'Death of Caesar', 1867.
Today marks the 2053rd anniversary of the assassination of Julius Caesar, which took place on the Ides of March, 44BC.
If that isn’t momentous enough, it is also the fifth anniversary of the creation of my little web design studio, which first surfaced, with its back to the sunlight, on 15 March 2004. I am proud that, so far as I know, I am the only person to deliberately time the founding of a company to coincide with an anniversary of the death of Caesar.
I am marking the occasion by having an extra half-spoonful of sugar in my late evening cup of tea, and four, rather than the customary three, Rich Tea biscuits to accompany it.

What restrained rejoicing! Not terribly roman at all!

Hello Elizabeth. I should have mentioned that I did of course enjoy the aforementioned tea and biscuits in the flickering light cast by a group of torched Christians.

are you reading to the light of those who have been plaguing your wife with stupid theology?
Once again, I come to your blog and think ‘the renaissance man lives.’

Hello Kimberly. It’s more like the pre-Renaissance man, indeed pre-second millenium man. It was an equal opportunities bonfire, no particular Christians in mind, just those closest to hand and most combustible.
